About Dr. Kim H. Tan
Dr. Kim H. Tan is Professor Emeritus at the Department of Crops and Soil Sciences at the University of Georgia in Athen Georgia U.S.A., where he has taught basic soils, soil chemistry, advanced soil chemistry and methodology of soil and plant analysis for over 25 years. Dr. Tan is author and co-author of over 200 articles, abstracts, proceedings and book chapters as well as author, co-author and editor of 13 books.
His most popular book Principles of Soil Chemistry published first by Marcel Dekker, Inc. is now in its fourth edition with Taylor & Francis –CRCR Press. His book on Andosol, a Hutchinson Ross Benchmark limited publication, was sold out as soon as it was out of the press and made him widely known as one of the authorities on Andosols, called Andisols in the U.S. Soil Taxonomy. Dr. Tan’s book, Humic Matter in Soil and the Environment. Principles and Controversies, published by Marcel Dekker, Inc., has received a Five-Star rating from both Amazon and Google. It is now in its second edition with Taylor & Francis publishers.
During his 28 years tenure at the University of Georgia, Dr. Tan was the recipient of numerous honors and awards for excellence in teaching at the College of Agriculture by ballot votes in college-wide student polls. To name a few: Dr. Tan was awarded in 1972 the Distinguished Faculty award by the College of Agriculture Alumni Association, the prestigious D. W. Brooks award of the College of Agriculture in 1982 and the Excellence in Teaching award in 1986 by the Gamma Sigma Delta. He was named fellow of the Soil Science Society of America and of the American Society of Agronomy in 1984.
Dr. Tan has organized and coached the Soil Judging Team of the Agronomy Department. Soon after, his team placed third in the Southern Regional Contest, which made it eligible for competing the next year in the U.S. National Soil Judging Contest sponsored by The Soil Science Society of America, where it placed third again. Dr. Tan has also built an audio-visual self tutorial in basic soils for the University students. He was honored with the Leadership award by the Alpha Zeta honor fraternity.
At retirement in 1996, Dr. Tan was appointed Professor Emeritus by the Board of Regents of The University of Georgia. He has been invited since then to teach soil chemistry and environmental soil science at various universities overseas, and was a FULBRIGHT visiting professor at the Universidad Nacional del Sur, Bahia Blanca, Argentina from 2002 to 2003.
